Missouri Cancer Support Resources

Cancer Support Resources in Missouri

Missouri’s cancer resources cluster heavily around St. Louis and Kansas City, creating two well-resourced metro anchors separated by a large rural interior where the gap between the oncology care available and what patients actually need is significant. The Ozarks, the Bootheel, and the farming communities of northern Missouri represent very different cancer experiences than the urban corridors — and the organizations that bridge those gaps are the focus of this directory.

St. Louis has exceptional cancer care infrastructure. Siteman Cancer Center at Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital is one of the country’s top NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers, with deep subspecialty oncology, clinical trials, and robust patient support programs. But St. Louis also contains profound health disparities. The city’s north side — predominantly Black, economically distressed, and historically neglected by systemic investment — has cancer mortality rates that significantly exceed the metro average. Geographic proximity to an outstanding cancer center does not automatically translate into access for residents who face insurance barriers, transportation challenges, and distrust rooted in decades of inadequate healthcare delivery.

Kansas City anchors cancer care in the western half of the state. The University of Kansas Cancer Center — an NCI-designated center technically in Kansas but serving the broader metro — and Saint Luke’s Cancer Institute provide major oncology resources. The complication is the state line: patients on the Missouri side of the metro may face insurance network issues when accessing Kansas facilities, and coordinating resources across two states adds complexity that requires patient navigation support.

The Ozarks region — the rolling hills and forested counties of south-central Missouri — is beautiful and largely isolated from specialized cancer care. Patients in communities like Rolla, West Plains, Poplar Bluff, and Mountain Grove face drives of 90 minutes to two hours to reach a comprehensive cancer center in St. Louis, Springfield, or Kansas City. Regional hospitals in Springfield and Joplin provide important mid-level oncology services, but subspecialty care still requires significant travel for most Ozarks patients.

The Missouri Bootheel — the eight southernmost counties that dip into the Mississippi alluvial plain — combines geographic isolation with some of the state’s highest poverty rates. This region shares more in common, economically and demographically, with the Mississippi Delta than with the rest of Missouri. Healthcare infrastructure is thin, transportation options are extremely limited, and the population is significantly underinsured. Cancer outcomes in the Bootheel consistently lag behind the rest of the state.

Missouri has among the highest smoking rates in the country, driving elevated lung, esophageal, and head and neck cancer incidence statewide. The opioid crisis — which has hit rural Missouri hard — also complicates cancer pain management in communities where providers are cautious about prescribing and patients may have complex histories with substance use.

Missouri has a large veteran community, with Fort Leonard Wood in Pulaski County being the major active-duty installation, plus significant veteran populations in the major metros. VA facilities in St. Louis, Kansas City, Poplar Bluff, and Columbia serve Missouri veterans facing cancer diagnoses tied to service-related exposures.

Whether you are a patient in treatment, a survivor moving forward, a caregiver holding it all together, or a social worker looking for referrals — this page is for you. Resources are organized starting with statewide programs, then by region across the state.

How this guide works: Resources are organized by region — statewide first, then city by city. Each listing tells you what the organization does, who it serves, and whether it is free. If something has changed since we published, call anyway — they can point you somewhere else.

Neighboring State Resources

Missouri borders eight states. Depending on where you live, resources in a neighboring state may be closer or better suited to your needs.

Illinois Cancer Resources

📍 Across the river from St. Louis

Many St. Louis metro patients live in Illinois (Belleville, Edwardsville, Collinsville). Illinois resources include the Illinois Cancer Care network, SIU School of Medicine cancer programs, and Illinois-specific financial assistance. If you live on the Illinois side, explore resources in both states.

View Illinois Resources

Kansas Cancer Resources

📍 Kansas City metro (KS side)

The University of Kansas Cancer Center — the region’s only NCI-designated center — is technically in Kansas. Many KC-area Missouri residents receive treatment there. Kansas also has its own financial assistance programs and support services that may be accessible to Missouri patients receiving care in KS.

View Kansas Resources

Arkansas Cancer Resources

📍 Southern Missouri border

Patients in Missouri’s southern Ozarks — particularly near Branson, West Plains, or the Arkansas border — may find that cancer centers in northwest Arkansas (Highlands Oncology, Mercy NW Arkansas) are closer than those in Springfield or St. Louis. UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute in Little Rock is also accessible.

View Arkansas Resources

Oklahoma Cancer Resources

📍 Southwest Missouri border

Patients in Missouri’s far southwest corner (near Joplin or Neosho) may be closer to cancer resources in Tulsa, Oklahoma — including the Stephenson Cancer Center (NCI-designated). Oklahoma also has tribal health resources that may serve eligible patients in the border region.
